Police in Machakos County have launched a manhunt for a bodaboda rider accused of throwing an 18-year-old girl into a cliff in Kanzalu, Matungulu, after she reportedly rejected his sexual advances.

Detectives attached to Kangundo Police Station are investigating the disturbing incident, which has triggered outrage in the area and renewed concern over the safety of women and girls using public motorcycle transport.

According to preliminary reports, the teenager is said to have been attacked after declining to have sex with the rider, who allegedly pushed or threw her into a cliff before fleeing the scene and disappearing.

The victim survived the ordeal but sustained serious injuries, including broken limbs, and is currently receiving treatment at Kangundo Level 4 Hospital.

Police are now pursuing leads to trace the suspect, whose whereabouts remained unknown as investigations intensified.
The shocking case is being treated as a serious criminal matter, with investigators expected to record the victim’s statement once her condition improves in order to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

Residents in Matungulu condemned the incident, describing it as a brutal act that underscores growing fears over violence targeting women and girls.

The attack has also revived debate over the conduct and regulation of some boda boda operators, amid past concerns involving rogue riders linked to insecurity and abuse.

Locals have called for swift justice, urging police to move with speed and ensure the suspect is arrested and prosecuted.

Authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could help track down the rider to report to Kangundo Police Station or the nearest police post.

As detectives continue piecing together what transpired in Kanzalu, the incident is likely to raise fresh questions about gender-based violence and the security of female passengers in rural transport networks
