Kitui County is set to join the rest of the world in marking International Women’s Day with a major community event scheduled for March 9, 2026, at Nyuani Primary School grounds in Kakeani Location, Mutonguni, within Kitui West Constituency.
The celebrations will be graced by Julius Malombe as the Guest of Honor and are expected to bring together women groups, development partners, community leaders, and residents to celebrate the achievements of women and advance conversations around gender equality.
Organizing the event is an intergovernmental committee tasked with coordinating preparations. The committee is chaired by Purity Mutisya, who is serving as the Assistant Director of Gender and is overseeing the planning process to ensure the success of the celebrations.

This year’s observance is guided by the global theme “Collaborate and Give to Achieve Gender Equality.” The theme calls on governments, civil society organizations, and communities to work together and invest in initiatives that uplift women and girls.
Stakeholders say the message resonates strongly both nationally and locally.
Across Kenya, leaders and organizations continue to push for stronger inclusion of women in leadership, economic empowerment opportunities, and access to resources.
In Kitui County, the focus is on strengthening grassroots initiatives that support women’s groups, entrepreneurship, and community development.

The day’s program will feature skits by women groups highlighting social and development issues affecting communities, entertainment from learners of Nyuani Primary School, and cultural performances by traditional dancers from Mutonguni.
Local artists Lydia Syomiti and Helena Ken are also scheduled to perform, adding a musical highlight to the celebrations.
Organizers say the event will serve as an important platform for recognizing the role of women in development while encouraging collaboration among stakeholders to accelerate progress toward gender equality.
