Maurice Mwongela, the father of Bishop Joseph Mwongela, has been laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kakumi Village in a solemn ceremony marked by prayer, reflection and tribute to a life deeply rooted in faith and service.

The late patriarch, who passed away at the age of 97, was remembered as a man of unwavering faith, humility, generosity and steadfast devotion to both family and Church. Speakers described him as a quiet but firm pillar whose influence extended beyond his household into the wider Christian community.

The Funeral Mass was presided over by Archbishop Philip Anyolo, while the homily was delivered by Archbishop Anthony Muheria, who urged the faithful to view the moment not only as a farewell but as a celebration of a life lived in hope.

Archbishop Muheria reminded mourners that faith is refined through hardship, illness and misunderstanding, noting that such trials purify and strengthen authentic Christian belief. He emphasized that love demands total self-giving and that suffering, when embraced in faith, carries redemptive meaning.

Drawing from the Beatitudes, he described them as the “heavenly identity card” of every believer, calling on Christians to embody works of mercy beginning within their families. “True identity is love — not merely spoken, but lived from the heart and spirit,” he said.

The burial brought together senior members of the clergy from across Kenya, reflecting the respect and honour accorded to Maurice Mwongela and his family.

Among those present were Archbishop Philip Anyolo, Archbishop Anthony Muheria, Bishop Joseph Mwongela, Bishop Jackson Murugara (IMC), Bishop Wallace Ng’ang’a, Bishop Peter Makau Munguti, Bishop Simon Peter Kamomoe, Bishop David Kamau, Bishop Willybard Kitogho Lagho, Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u and Bishop Norman King’oo Wambua. The Apostolic Nuncio’s office was represented by Monsignor Luciano Labanca.

Political and civic leaders also attended, including Kitui Governor Julius Malombe, Senator Enoch Kiio and Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Katisya, alongside national officials from the Catholic Women Association (CWA) and Catholic Men Association (CMA), clergy, religious and faithful from within and beyond the Diocese.

As tributes continue, Maurice Mwongela is being remembered as a man whose enduring legacy of faith, integrity and quiet strength will live on through generations.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
