ODM Ousts Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General in Shock Move Signaling 2027 Succession Battle

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) has relieved Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna of his duties as the party’s Secretary General with immediate effect, in a dramatic development that is already being interpreted as a strategic repositioning ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In his place, Hon. Catherine Omanyo, who has been serving as one of the party’s Deputy Secretary Generals, will act as Secretary General until a substantive office holder is elected in accordance with the party constitution.

The Secretary General position is one of the most powerful offices within ODM, overseeing party operations, messaging, grassroots coordination and implementation of strategic decisions. Sifuna has, in recent years, been the public face of ODM’s opposition politics — aggressively defending party leader Raila Odinga while taking firm positions on governance, accountability and national reforms.

His sudden removal therefore signals more than just an administrative reshuffle.
Political observers argue that the decision by the NEC could point to deeper internal realignments within ODM as the party quietly begins recalibrating its strategy ahead of 2027.

The move also raises questions about whether ODM is streamlining its leadership to strengthen internal cohesion, manage succession dynamics, or reposition key figures for future political roles within the Azimio coalition framework.

While the party is yet to release a detailed explanation behind the decision, the development is expected to trigger intense debate within ODM ranks and across the broader political landscape.

As the 2027 contest gradually takes shape, changes within major political parties like ODM are likely to be closely scrutinized for signals of succession strategy, coalition negotiations, and shifting power balances.
