New details have emerged surrounding the fatal road accident that claimed the life of Deacon Denis Bernard Maithya, with a reliable eyewitness telling Channel 15 News that the late deacon was riding a Yamaha motorcycle when he was involved in a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle along the Mwingi–Nguni Road.

According to the witness, the tragic accident occurred at around 9:30pm at Kyanundu, a stretch residents describe as poorly lit and dangerous at night. Following the impact, Deacon Denis was thrown across the road, where a lorry travelling in the same direction reportedly ran over him, leading to his instant death.
Exclusive photos obtained by Channel 15 News from the scene show the severely mangled remains of the motorcycle, particularly on the rider’s side, underscoring the violent nature of the collision and the circumstances that led to the deacon’s death.
Residents who rushed to the scene said the crash happened within seconds, leaving no opportunity for intervention. Emergency responders later arrived but could only confirm that Deacon Denis had died on the spot.

At the time of his death, Deacon Denis had been newly ordained on December 8, 2025, and was serving at St. Patrick’s Parish, Nguni, under the Catholic Diocese of Kitui. His sudden passing has shocked the clergy and faithful, coming just weeks into his diaconal ministry.
Born to Boniface Maithya Kisungi and Cecilia Muia Maithya, the late deacon hailed from St. Paul’s–Kasyala Parish and was the third-born in a family of five. His journey to priesthood took him through Kyeni Primary School, WeaverBird High School in Kitale, St. Mary’s Propaedeutic Seminary, Molo, St. Augustine’s Senior Seminary, Mabanga, and later St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary, Nairobi.
He graduated from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) on October 24, 2025, and undertook pastoral formation in several parishes across Kitui County, including Ikutha, Kabati, Miambani, Katutu, Mutomo, Nuu, Nguni, and Museve.

The accident has renewed concerns over road safety along the Mwingi–Nguni Road, particularly regarding night travel, speeding, and the safety of motorcyclists who frequently use the route.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash as the Diocese and the Catholic faithful continue to mourn a young servant whose ministry was cut short at its very beginning.
The Catholic Diocese of Kitui has called for prayers for the repose of Deacon Denis’ soul and strength for his family during this difficult time.
