Eight people, including several students on their way back to school, have been rushed to various hospitals in Mwingi after a Toyota Probox they were traveling in was involved in a grisly accident at Nyamanzei area along the Kamuwongo–Kyuso road in Mwingi North Constituency.

Confirming the incident to Channel 15 News, Kamuwongo Chief Mary Mwende said the victims escaped with serious injuries and are receiving treatment. She urged drivers of Probox vehicles, which are commonly used as public service vehicles in the region, to exercise caution during this school reopening period.

“We thank God lives were spared, but reckless driving and overloading remain a ticking time bomb. Drivers must be more careful on these roads,” Chief Mwende warned.

The Tuesday morning accident comes less than 24 hours after another crash in Kitui East, where a 41-seater Matatu veered off the road while speeding on its way to Nairobi from Mbitini. Most of the passengers were students and had to be admitted to Kitui Referral Hospital.

The two back-to-back accidents have triggered fresh concerns over the safety of learners as they troop back to schools, with parents and local leaders demanding stricter enforcement of traffic rules on rural roads notorious for reckless driving and overloaded vehicles.
