NLP Declares Independence from Kenya’s Political Elite, Vows to Field Candidates Nationwide in 2027

The National Liberal Party (NLP) has delivered a bold political bombshell, declaring total independence from both government and opposition, while accusing Kenya’s dominant political blocs of being “political cartels masquerading as leadership.”

In a strongly-worded statement issued after a high-level leadership meeting in Nairobi, NLP Secretary General Omondi K’oyoo announced that the party was stepping out as a fully independent force committed to liberal democracy, transparency, and people-centered leadership. He said the party was tired of a political culture that “recycles itself through dynastic alliances, tribal arithmetic and hollow promises.”

The NLP said the current political class—on both sides of the aisle—has become indistinguishable in their obsession with impunity, patronage and exclusion. “Kenya’s political theatre has become a tragic rerun of the old KANU regime,” the party declared, adding that it will no longer be beholden to legacy power barons or tribal kingpins.

In what reads like a political war cry ahead of 2027, the NLP announced it will field candidates in all upcoming by-elections and intends to have aspirants in every ward, constituency and county in the next general elections — including a presidential candidate. Omondi K’oyoo underscored that the NLP will not endorse any existing political figures but will instead drive a “values-driven revolution” aimed at giving Kenyans a genuine political alternative.

“We are the alternative to form the next government, not through backroom deals, but through a new face of politics — uncompromised, unbought and unafraid,” K’oyoo stated.

Calling upon the youth, marginalized groups and all Kenyans “betrayed by elite politics”, the NLP urged citizens to reclaim their power and reject recycled leadership. The party says this is not merely a political shift but a national awakening aimed at restoring hope, integrity and freedom in governance.

With its statement concluding with a call to “build a Kenya where leadership is earned, not inherited,” the NLP appears to be positioning itself as the leading liberal alternative in a deeply polarized political landscape.
