The Ithookwe Stadium construction in Kitui County has reached 15% completion just three weeks after breaking ground, as both county and national governments ramp up efforts ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations set for October 20, 2025.

The 10,000-seater stadium, budgeted at Ksh 700 million, is part of a broader Ksh 2 billion national investment in Kitui, which includes a new State Lodge, road upgrades, and other infrastructure projects to facilitate the hosting of the national event.

On Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary for Sports Salim Mvurya led a high-level inspection tour of the stadium construction site. He was accompanied by Kitui Deputy Governor Augustine Wambua Kanani, County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo Katisya, Sports CECM Phoebe Ndunyu Mutemi, and several MCAs.

Mvurya confirmed that a State Lodge is under construction at the Kitui County Commissioner’s residence, which will serve as a secure and dignified accommodation facility for top dignitaries during the celebrations.

Deputy Governor Kanani lauded the partnership between the county and national governments, saying the project is as a results of the good collaborations between the two levels of governance.

Speaker Kinengo echoed the urgency and symbolic importance of the visit. The project has already created employment opportunities for dozens of local youth engaged in construction. Additionally, feeder roads linking Ithookwe to Kitui town and surrounding areas will be constructed or rehabilitated to ease mobility ahead of the national event.

The full stadium and related infrastructure are expected to be completed and officially handed over to the National Planning Committee by October 14, 2025.
