Azimio La Umoja leader Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga has cancelled the highly anticipated Kamukunji rally that was scheduled to take place today to mark the Saba Saba protests. The former Prime Minister is, however, expected to issue a statement on the unfolding situation anytime from now at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi.
The cancellation comes amid rising tension and sporadic demonstrations across parts of Nairobi and other towns, as protesters mark the anniversary of the 1990 Saba Saba uprising that pushed for multiparty democracy in Kenya.
In Kangemi, Nairobi, chaos erupted earlier today when police clashed with protesters attempting to block roads and light bonfires. In the ensuing confrontation, an unidentified man was reportedly shot by police and is feared dead. Witnesses say the man was unarmed and was caught in the chaos while trying to flee. Police have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
Meanwhile, in Nakuru, sentiments against the government continue to rise. In a viral video circulating online, a local resident is heard expressing frustration with President William Ruto’s leadership.
“Kama kazi imemshinda atoke tupee Gachagua. Gachagua ndio Kingpin wa hii nchi,” the man says, suggesting that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua should take over the reins of leadership.
The country remains on edge as riot police maintain heavy presence in key hotspots, including Kibera, Mathare, Githurai, and parts of the Nairobi CBD. The opposition had promised peaceful commemorations of the Saba Saba Day, but the heavy deployment and confrontations paint a different picture.
As the nation awaits Raila Odinga’s statement, the government has urged calm and warned against illegal demonstrations. Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, in an earlier advisory, said security agencies will not allow any breach of peace or destruction of property.
This year’s Saba Saba comes at a time of increased political friction, economic strain, and public discontent over the Finance Act 2025 and controversial government spending.
