A 17-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with the chilling murder of 3-year-old Margaret Wanjiru Kirathe, whose lifeless body was discovered just meters away from a church in Menengai, Nakuru County.
The suspect, identified as Lizz Njeri Mwangi, was apprehended following swift investigations by police after receiving a distress call about a child found unconscious near PCEA Shalom Mchanganyiko Church. The toddler was rushed to Kenlands Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to preliminary findings, young Margaret was allegedly lured away from the church compound by Lizz, who led her to a secluded area before strangling her with a piece of cloth. The motive behind the gruesome act remains unclear as detectives continue their probe.
Police, acting on intelligence, mounted an operation that led to the arrest of the suspect at her home in Judea Village, Menengai Sub-Location, within Kiamaina Ward. During the arrest, officers recovered the clothes Lizz is believed to have worn during the crime, as well as the cloth used in the murder — both of which matched evidence captured on CCTV footage.
The suspect is currently in police custody and is undergoing formal processing ahead of her arraignment in court.
Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, urging residents to remain calm as justice for baby Margaret takes its course.
