Kenyan football has been rocked by a major scandal after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) provisionally suspended Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi for 90 days over suspected match-fixing.

The decision, announced today by FKF, follows the emergence of circulating videos raising concerns about possible match manipulation. The federation cited Section VII (2) of its Anti-Match Manipulation Regulations (2016) as the basis for its action, emphasizing its commitment to upholding integrity in the sport.

Matasi, who plays for Kakamega Homeboyz FC, has been formally informed of the suspension, which bars him from participating in any FKF-sanctioned competitions and events. FKF has also confirmed that it is working closely with FIFA, CAF, and other relevant authorities in an ongoing investigation that could have far-reaching implications for Kenyan football.

    Shocking Allegations, Mounting Pressure

While FKF has not publicly disclosed the specifics of the alleged match manipulation, the suspension of one of Kenya’s most experienced goalkeepers has sent shockwaves through the local football fraternity. Fans and pundits alike are demanding transparency as speculation grows over the nature of the alleged wrongdoing.

Sources indicate that multiple stakeholders, including betting watchdogs, international football federations, and local clubs, are monitoring the situation closely. Should Matasi be found guilty, he could face a lengthy ban or even lifetime suspension from professional football.

    Matasi’s Career and the Fallout

Matasi, 36, is one of Kenya’s most celebrated goalkeepers, having been instrumental in Harambee Stars’ 2019 AFCON qualification. His suspension raises serious questions about the prevalence of match-fixing in Kenyan football and whether more players could be implicated.

Kakamega Homeboyz FC has yet to issue an official statement, but insiders suggest the club is deeply concerned about the potential ramifications. If Matasi is found guilty, Homeboyz could also face sanctions depending on the findings of the investigation.

The Bigger Picture: A War on Match-Fixing?

This development comes amid increasing scrutiny on match-fixing in Kenyan football. Just last year, FKF handed lifetime bans to several lower-league players over similar allegations, underscoring the growing influence of betting syndicates on local football.

FKF has assured the public that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, promising further updates as the case unfolds.
