Farmers in Makueni County have received a major boost as Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. launched two groundbreaking initiatives aimed at transforming agriculture—the Agripreneur Model and the County Crop Protection Unit.

During the event held on Thursday, 210 agripreneurs and crop protection specialists were commissioned, ushering in a new phase of agricultural development in the county.

The Agripreneurs will enhance agricultural extension and advisory services, empowering farmers to improve productivity, food and nutrition security, incomes, and overall welfare within Makueni’s agricultural value chains.

Meanwhile, the County Crop Protection Unit has been established to efficiently combat pests and crop diseases. This unit comprises trained Spray Service Providers (SSPs) who will ensure the safe and responsible use of pest control products when necessary, prioritizing environmental safety and the quality of agricultural produce.

Speaking at the launch, Governor Kilonzo highlighted the significance of these initiatives in equipping farmers with essential knowledge and resources for agricultural prosperity.

“Agriculture is more than just a sector—it represents our security, health, and wealth. It feeds our families, educates our children, and sustains our community,” the governor stated.

These initiatives will focus on high-value crops and enterprises, including mangoes, avocados, citrus fruits, tomatoes, green grams, pigeon peas, dairy and poultry farming, as well as industrial crops like coffee, macadamia, sunflower, and cotton.

To further strengthen the agricultural sector, the governor announced plans to establish a pack house in Makueni that will meet international export standards. This initiative aims to enhance market access for local farmers and boost profitability.

The launch event was attended by key county officials, including County Secretary Dr. Justin Kyambi, Agriculture CECM Joyce Mutua, County Assembly Agriculture Committee Chairperson Hon. Francis Mutuku, and committee members Hon. Jonathan Kimongo, Hon. Sarah Mbilo, Hon. Fiametta Mwikali, and Josephine Ndambuki. Their presence reaffirmed the county’s collective commitment to advancing agriculture and economic growth.

These forward-thinking initiatives mark Makueni County’s determination to transform its agricultural sector, equipping farmers with the tools needed to thrive in both local and international markets.
