The Senate is set to hear the impeachment motion against Isiolo Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo this afternoon in a plenary session that could determine the governor’s political fate.

The Senate resumed its sittings this morning from a short recess, with Speaker Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi officially convening the House through a gazette notice. The impeachment hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Senate Chambers within Parliament Buildings.

The Speaker directed that the case be handled in plenary rather than by a select committee, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter and the public interest it has drawn.
Governor Guyo was impeached last week by the Isiolo County Assembly on grounds of gross misconduct, abuse of office, violation of the Constitution, and alleged mismanagement of county funds. Today, the County Assembly is expected to present its evidence, after which Governor Guyo and his legal team will be allowed to respond.
A two-thirds majority vote by senators is required to uphold the impeachment and formally remove the governor from office.

The proceedings come amid heightened political attention, as the Senate undertakes one of its core constitutional duties: providing checks and balances to county governments under Article 181 of the Constitution.
Should the motion succeed, Governor Guyo will join a small list of county leaders removed from office since the introduction of devolution. The hearing’s outcome is likely to influence political realignments in Isiolo and set a national precedent on the limits of executive conduct at the county level.
