The family of Albert Ojwang’, a teacher and outspoken blogger who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody, has declared they will not bury him until justice is served—despite high-profile support and state efforts to facilitate the funeral.
Speaking from their modest homestead in Kapiyo village, family spokesperson Herman Opiyo said their grief has only intensified with recent developments, including the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat—the senior officer said to have lodged the complaint that led to Ojwang’s arrest.
“We shall not bury our son while his killers walk free,” Opiyo stated.
“Our pain runs deeper than ever. The resignation of Lagat is not justice—it’s just an admission that something went terribly wrong. We need full accountability.”
The family acknowledged and appreciated President William Ruto’s personal outreach and contribution towards burial preparations. However, they remain firm that no amount of support or sympathy can replace the need for justice.
The case has captured national attention, with both President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga offering support. Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has gone a step further—authorizing the construction of a fully furnished three-bedroom house for the family ahead of the anticipated burial. Still, the family has stood its ground.
Ojwang’s death has triggered nationwide protests, with civil rights groups and activists demanding answers. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a probe into the case, following revelations from a police whistleblower who claimed that Ojwang was targeted for “disciplining” by high-ranking officers.
“Albert died fighting for truth. We won’t allow that truth to be buried with him,” Opiyo added.
As the calls for justice grow louder, so does the resolve of the Ojwang family. Until those responsible are held accountable in a court of law, their son will remain above ground—a painful symbol of a nation still fighting for truth, justice, and reform.
