The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the exit of its Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary, Mr. Marjan Hussein Marjan, following a mutual agreement to terminate his services.
In a press release dated February 3, 2026, the electoral body said the decision brings to an end Marjan’s tenure and marks the start of the process to recruit a new CEO and Secretary to the Commission.
The Commission noted that an interim replacement will be appointed in due course to serve as Acting CEO/Commission Secretary to ensure continuity and a smooth transition within the Secretariat.
According to IEBC, the leadership change is part of broader internal reforms aimed at strengthening institutional preparedness, accountability, efficiency, and results-oriented systems as the country prepares for upcoming by-elections and the 2027 General Election.
“Any changes will be designed to ensure effective institutional preparedness, strengthen internal accountability, and sustain leadership continuity,” the Commission said.
IEBC further assured Kenyans and stakeholders that the transition will not disrupt ongoing activities, including the conduct of by-elections and preparations for the next general election. Instead, the Commission said the changes are intended to enhance transparency and service delivery.
Mr. Marjan was appointed CEO/Commission Secretary in March 2022 and played a key role in steering the Secretariat during a prolonged period when the Commission operated without commissioners, until the current team was fully constituted on July 11, 2025.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon praised Marjan for his professionalism and commitment, wishing him well in his future endeavors.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to delivering credible, free, and fair elections, emphasizing that the Secretariat remains central to Kenya’s electoral management and democratic process.
