The late Rev. Deacon Dennis Bernard Maithya was laid to rest on Monday in a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony at the Mutune Diocesan Cemetery, as hundreds of mourners gathered to bid farewell to a young cleric whose life and ministry were cut short by a tragic road accident.

The Funeral Mass, held at St. Patrick’s Mutune Parish grounds, was presided over by Bishop Norman King’oo of the Catholic Diocese of Machakos, bringing together clergy, religious, family members, parishioners, and faithful from across Kitui .

During the Mass, the homilist, Bishop Joseph Mwongela, delivered a powerful message reminding the faithful that life is precious and must be respected, noting that the time and manner of death are known only to God.
He urged Christians to remain prayerful even in moments of pain and loss, while calling on the faithful to continue supporting clergy, religious men and women, and seminarians so that they may serve God faithfully.

Bishop Mwongela further emphasized the values of love, unity, and cooperation within the Church, encouraging believers to draw strength from God as they carry their daily crosses, even in the face of profound loss.
In his message, Bishop Norman King’oo challenged Christians to live responsibly and faithfully each day, reminding them of the uncertainty of life.

“The only day we are sure of is today, and the only time we are sure of is now. Whatever you are doing, do it as if it were your last day, for tomorrow may never be yours,” he said.
He encouraged the faithful to serve God and the Church wholeheartedly, emphasizing that Christians are missionaries among themselves and should always give their very best in service.
Deacon Dennis was ordained on December 8, 2025, and was serving at St. Patrick’s Parish, Nguni, under the Catholic Diocese of Kitui. His death occurred on January 23, 2026, following a tragic road accident along the Mwingi–Nguni Road, an incident that shocked the Church and the wider community.

His burial marked the end of days of mourning across the Diocese, with many describing him as a devoted servant of God whose ministry, though brief, left a lasting impact on those he served.

As the final prayers were offered and his body laid to rest at the Mutune Diocesan Cemetery, the faithful were urged to carry forward his legacy of service, humility, and faith.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
