Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is set to appear before the National Assembly on Tuesday to defend himself against a motion for his removal from office. The impeachment motion, tabled by Kibwezi East MP Mwengi Mutuse, outlines 11 grounds for Gachagua’s ousting, intensifying political tensions.

Despite efforts to halt the proceedings, High Court Judge Bahati Mwamuye has, for the second time, declined to issue interim orders stopping the process. So far, 19 cases have been filed seeking to block the impeachment, prompting the National Assembly to request that the Judiciary consolidate them to streamline the process.

Adding a new twist to the saga, former Bahati MP Kimani Ngunjiri has publicly urged President William Ruto to pick Gachagua’s replacement from outside the Mt. Kenya region if the impeachment motion succeeds. Ngunjiri suggested that such a move could foster peace within the region, which has been at the center of the political conversation.

The coming days will determine Gachagua’s political fate, with his defense in parliament and the legal battles shaping a key moment in Kenya’s political landscape. All eyes remain on the National Assembly as the case proceeds.
