The Kenya Meteorological Service Authority has issued a weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, large ocean waves and high temperatures across several parts of the country, with residents urged to prepare for possible flash floods and other weather-related hazards.

In an advisory issued on Friday, October 23, the meteorological agency forecast moderate to heavy rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours in parts of the Coast, Northeastern region, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, Central Highlands, including parts of Nairobi, and the Southeastern Lowlands.

The rainfall is expected between Saturday, October 24, and Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with the highest intensity anticipated between Monday, October 26, and Wednesday, October 28. Rainfall intensity is projected to decrease by Friday, October 30.

The advisory, classified as moderate to heavy in severity, has a validity period running from 6pm on October 24 to 9am on October 30.

Kitui, Machakos and Makueni Among Affected Counties

In the Lower Eastern region, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni are among the counties listed in the advisory, raising the need for residents to remain alert as the rainfall period begins.

Other affected areas include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Isiolo, Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Murang’a, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nakuru, Kajiado, Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Siaya, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo and West Pokot.

Parts of Nairobi and Taita-Taveta are also included in the areas of concern.

The agency cautioned that rainfall may not be evenly distributed across the affected counties, meaning some localities could experience heavier downpours than others.

Strong Winds and High Ocean Waves Expected

Beyond rainfall, the advisory warns of gusty winds, with strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 46 kilometres per hour, expected over coastal, eastern and northern regions.

Ocean wave heights exceeding two metres are also forecast for Sunday, October 25, raising safety concerns for people engaging in maritime activities.

The agency further warned that high temperatures are expected to persist in some parts of the country, particularly northern areas.

Residents Warned Over Flash Floods and Lightning

Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain vigilant for potential flash floods and poor visibility during heavy rainfall.

The meteorological agency warned that floodwaters can occur downstream even in locations that have not experienced heavy rainfall, urging residents to exercise caution near rivers and other waterways.

People have also been advised to avoid sheltering under trees or staying near grilled windows during thunderstorms to reduce exposure to lightning strikes.

Residents in areas experiencing high temperatures have been urged to remain hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

The advisory calls on relevant government agencies, county administrations and emergency response organisations to take note of the forecast as the country moves into the October–December short-rains season.

Residents are encouraged to monitor subsequent weather updates and follow safety guidance throughout the advisory period.
