Sixty years after Kenya gained independence, the Anzauni clan is set to restore one of its oldest cultural institutions by crowning Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli as its first officially recognized chief in a landmark coronation expected to attract more than 10,000 delegates from across Kenya and the diaspora.

The October 3 coronation in Kitui Town will see Dr. Muli assume the title His Royal Highness Chief Kyalo Muli the 1st, becoming the inaugural custodian of the Anzauni clan under a formal traditional leadership structure sanctioned by the Akamba Governing Council of Elders.

His nomination on Saturday, July 25, by Anzauni elders in Machakos ends a six-decade absence of a recognized clan chief, a development elders describe as a defining moment in the preservation of Kamba cultural heritage and governance.

With an estimated 400,000 members spread across Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, the Coast region and parts of Tanzania, the Anzauni is among the largest clans in the Akamba community, giving the coronation significance beyond culture and into the region’s social and political landscape.

The ceremony will be led by senior Anzauni elders and the Chairman of the Akamba Governing Council of Elders, with community leaders, professionals and delegates from the diaspora expected to attend what organizers say will be one of Ukambani’s largest cultural gatherings this year.

The installation also elevates the profile of Dr. Muli, the Party Leader of the National Liberal Party (NLP) and a Dubai-based businessman, who has increasingly emerged as an influential figure in Ukambani’s political discourse ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Through the Kyalo Kya Maendeleo Foundation, Dr. Muli has championed education bursaries, water projects and youth empowerment programmes while advocating for regional unity through the proposed Ukambani Unity Pact 2027.

Political observers say the restoration of the Anzauni chieftaincy reflects a broader resurgence of traditional institutions as communities seek to strengthen cultural identity while influencing development and public affairs.

For the Anzauni clan, however, October 3 will be remembered not just as a coronation, but as the day a 60-year chapter closed and a new era of traditional leadership began.
