Three traffic police officers attached to Webuye Police Station have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of soliciting and receiving bribes from motorists along the busy Webuye-Kitale Road.

The arrests followed an extensive investigation launched after the Commission received numerous complaints from members of the public, public service vehicle (PSV) operators, and heavy commercial truck drivers who accused officers manning a roadblock of rampant extortion.

According to the EACC, intelligence gathered during a targeted surveillance operation established that the officers were routinely stopping motorists and demanding bribes without carrying out vehicle inspections or enforcing any traffic laws.

The Commission said the officers allegedly focused on collecting illegal payments from motorists entering and leaving the border town instead of performing their lawful duties.

The suspects have been identified as Corporal Kipyego Metto, Police Constable Ben Kiptoo Maswai, and Police Constable Alex Kidui Makee, all attached to Webuye Police Station.

The three officers were arrested on Thursday and escorted to the EACC Western Regional Office in Bungoma, where they are undergoing processing as investigations continue ahead of possible prosecution.

The anti-graft agency said the operation forms part of its intensified nationwide campaign against bribery and corruption at public service delivery points, particularly in sectors that directly interact with members of the public.

EACC noted that it is scaling up intelligence gathering, surveillance, and enforcement operations targeting public institutions and high-risk sectors where bribery has become entrenched, with the aim of enhancing accountability, restoring public confidence, and ensuring citizens receive services without being subjected to extortion.

The Commission has also urged Kenyans to continue reporting corruption and bribery incidents, reaffirming its commitment to working with law enforcement agencies to eradicate graft and promote integrity in public service.
