The race for the Kitui Central parliamentary seat took a new turn on Thursday after Kitui’s Chief Officer for Basic Education, ECDE and Child Care Facilities, Pauline Kikele Mwania, officially declared her interest in vying for the constituency’s Member of Parliament seat in the 2027 General Election.

Mwania made the declaration while representing Governor Dr. Julius Malombe during the Kenya Comprehensive Schools Headteachers Association (KECOSHA) 2nd Edition Conference held at the Kitui Multipurpose Development and Training Institute in Kitui Central.

In remarks that drew applause from education stakeholders attending the event, Mwania said the time had come for teachers and education professionals to have one of their own represent them in Parliament.

“It is time for teachers to send one of their own to Parliament,” she declared, signaling the start of what is expected to be a closely watched political journey in Kitui Central.

The announcement came as Mwania highlighted the County Government’s achievements in the education sector, including the allocation of Sh642 million for ECDE teachers in the current financial year and the support of 33,600 learners through a bursary programme worth Sh282 million.

She also outlined the county’s investments in vocational training, revealing that Sh35 million had been paid to the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) to facilitate trade testing and certification for 750 trainees, while 24 vocational instructors had already been recruited with another 16 expected to join soon.

Although her speech largely focused on education and skills development, it was her declaration of political ambitions that quickly became the talking point among delegates and local leaders present.

Mwania’s entry into the race is likely to reshape political calculations in Kitui Central, a constituency that has traditionally attracted intense competition from seasoned politicians and emerging leaders alike.

Political observers say her extensive background in education management, coupled with years of public service within the county administration, could position her as a formidable contender, particularly among teachers, parents and youth benefiting from county education programmes.

Her declaration now sets the stage for what promises to be an early contest for the Kitui Central parliamentary seat as aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
