A multi-agency security team has intercepted a passenger bus ferrying bullets and suspected government stores at Kanyonyoo along the Thika–Garissa Highway, in an operation that authorities say may have averted a serious security threat.
The bus, registration number KCW 208A, belonging to Buscar Sacco, was travelling from Lamu to Nairobi when it was flagged down at a routine roadblock.
What began as a standard inspection quickly escalated after officers conducted a thorough search of the luggage compartment and discovered a suspicious blue metallic box.
Upon opening it, the team recovered 19 rounds of 7.62x51mm G3 live ammunition and 116 rounds of 7.62x39mm AK-47 live ammunition.

Also found in the box were two empty AK-47 magazines, two machetes and a collection of General Service Unit (GSU) gear, including ceremonial attire, two combat jackets, three jungle green trousers and a red beret.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the consignment had been booked as a parcel at Mokowe in Lamu County, destined for Nairobi.
However, the package did not bear the sender’s details, raising concerns over its origin and intended use.

The bus driver, Said Abdulrazak Ahmed Abadalla, and conductor, Bernard Ochieng Odhiambo, were arrested at the scene and escorted to Kanyonyoo Police Station alongside the vehicle and the recovered items.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify those behind the consignment and establish whether it is linked to organised criminal activity or other security threats.
The incident has prompted heightened vigilance along the Thika–Garissa corridor, a key transport route, with security agencies warning public service vehicle operators against accepting parcels without proper documentation.
