The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a suspect identified as Bare Sahara Ahmed over remarks captured in a viral social media video that authorities say were inciteful and capable of undermining national cohesion.
In a statement, the DCI said the arrest followed what it described as a swift and thorough review of the footage, alongside ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the full context and intent behind the statements made.
According to investigators, the suspect is currently in lawful custody and is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.
The arrest comes at a time of heightened concern over inflammatory online content and its potential to trigger division, particularly in areas grappling with insecurity and communal tensions.
While reaffirming constitutional protections on freedom of expression, the DCI cautioned that such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.
“Utterances that may incite division, hatred, or threaten peaceful coexistence will be dealt with firmly and without exception,” the agency said.
Authorities also urged the public to remain calm, maintain peace, and avoid circulating inflammatory material that could escalate tensions.
The development signals a hardening stance by security agencies on hate speech and incitement, especially through digital platforms, with investigators indicating that anyone found culpable of fueling hostility or threatening public order will face the law.
The case is expected to draw public attention as the suspect is presented in court, where the charges to be preferred will likely shed more light on the direction of investigations.
