A 30-year-old woman has died after she was knocked down by a 14-seater matatu at Kwaindi Market near the busy Makutano–Kithimani Junction along the Machakos–Kitui Road.
Confirming the incident, Kibau Assistant Chief Cosmus Munuve said the woman was hit while attempting to cross the road as she headed to Kwaindi Market.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Channel 15 News, the woman may have attempted to cross the road without proper caution, moments before the oncoming matatu struck her.
“The matatu was approaching when the woman suddenly moved to cross the road. It happened very fast,” said one eyewitness at the scene.

The shocking incident has sparked concerns among residents about road safety at the Makutano–Kithimani Junction, which is known for heavy traffic and frequent pedestrian crossings.
Some witnesses speculated that the manner in which the woman attempted to cross the road appeared careless, with one even suggesting it looked like a possible attempt at self-harm.
However, authorities have not confirmed such claims and investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
The tragedy also highlights the urgent need for increased mental health and suicide awareness, with experts urging members of the public to seek help whenever they experience emotional distress or overwhelming life challenges.
Residents are now calling on authorities to install speed calming measures and enhance traffic control around Kwaindi Market to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Police have since moved the body to a nearby mortuary as investigations into the fatal incident continue.
