A female foreign national believed to be a Belgian citizen has died following a tragic road accident at the notorious Salama downhill stretch in Kilome, Makueni County.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday evening, involved a trailer and a 14-seater Nissan matatu, according to a road traffic report shared with newsrooms by the Kenya Red Cross Society.
In the report, the humanitarian agency said its first responders were among those who arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. The team worked alongside police officers in rescue operations before the victims were rushed to hospital.
The deceased, described as a Belgian national, succumbed to injuries sustained during the collision. Another foreign national of Portuguese origin sustained serious injuries and was immediately referred to Sultan Hamud Level 4 Hospital for emergency treatment.
Police officers secured the scene and escorted the injured to the medical facility as investigations into the cause of the accident were launched.
Salama downhill, located along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, has in the past been flagged as a high-risk blackspot due to frequent accidents involving heavy commercial vehicles and public service transport.
Authorities are expected to release further details once identification of the victims is formally completed and investigations finalized.
