An Administration Police officer attached to Ngoni in Mbooni East, Makueni County, is on the run after detectives allegedly found cannabis planted within the police station compound.

Police said the discovery was made after officers acted on a tip-off from members of the public. Detectives raided the station premises and reportedly stumbled upon bhang growing inside the compound.

The officer believed to be linked to the illegal crop escaped moments before he could be arrested.

A manhunt has since been launched.
The local police boss in Mbooni East confirmed the incident, saying investigations are ongoing to establish how the narcotic ended up within a government facility.

“It is true officers conducted an operation following information received. One suspect escaped and efforts to trace him are underway,” the officer said, declining to be named because he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the quantity of cannabis recovered.

The incident comes at a time when the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) is leading a nationwide crackdown on drugs and substance abuse.

The campaign has seen multi-agency teams conduct raids across several counties in a renewed push to curb cultivation, trafficking and consumption of illegal narcotics.
Security officials said disciplinary action would be taken if investigations confirm the officer’s involvement.

The case is likely to raise concerns over integrity within the security agencies as the government intensifies the fight against drug abuse.

Members of the public have been urged to share information that could lead to the suspect’s arrest.
