A suspected robber was on Sunday night lynched by members of the public after a botched robbery attempt along the Matuu–Mwingi highway in Kitui County.
According to police reports, the deceased was part of a three-member gang believed to have been targeting businessmen in the area. The gang, armed with crude weapons, allegedly attempted to rob a trader outside his shop when members of the public raised an alarm.
The suspect was cornered and beaten to death by an angry mob before police officers could respond. His two accomplices managed to flee on foot and are currently being pursued by authorities.
The body of the deceased was later moved to Kitui mortuary for identification and post-mortem examination.
While confirming the incident, police warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, urging them to report criminal activity to the nearest police station instead.
