In a surprising yet welcome shift from recent political wrangles, the Machakos County Assembly today put aside internal tensions and unanimously approved the Second Supplementary Budget Estimates for the Financial Year 2024/2025, along with the Machakos County Supplementary Appropriation Bill, 2025.

Presiding over the afternoon session, Speaker Ann Kiusya commended the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) for their focus and collective resolve to put development above division.

“I want to sincerely thank all members for rising to the occasion. This House has today demonstrated maturity and unity,” Speaker Kiusya said after the vote.

The budget, tabled by Budget and Appropriations Committee Chair Hon. Dominic Ndambuki (MCA, Kathiani Central Ward), includes realignments to boost ongoing infrastructure projects, strengthen healthcare systems, and respond to critical operational gaps within the county government.

MCAs across the political divide threw their weight behind the Bill, praising the committee for what they termed a “well-balanced and people-centered financial plan.”

The approval is a significant move in ensuring that emerging county needs are met promptly ahead of the new fiscal year, even as revenue pressures continue to mount across devolved units.

Today’s show of unity stood in stark contrast to recent drama at the Assembly — including an earlier sitting this week where tensions flared over proposed changes in the Wiper Majority leadership. What had threatened to spiral into a full-blown political fallout now appears to have taken a backseat — at least temporarily — as MCAs chose to rally behind urgent service delivery imperatives.

Whether this calm holds remains to be seen, but for now, Machakos voters can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that key government functions are back on track — and the spotlight, for once, is on policy, not politics.
