The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has sounded the alarm over what they describe as a disturbing rise in the disregard for human life across the country, calling for accountability in the face of mounting cases of unexplained deaths involving innocent Kenyans.
In a strongly worded statement issued Tuesday, the bishops expressed deep concern over the security response to last year’s Gen Z-led protests against the 2024 Finance Bill, ahead of this year’s anniversary demonstrations expected on June 25th. The clergy urged the government to allow peaceful commemorations to proceed without interference or intimidation.
“The lives of innocent Kenyans are being lost in circumstances that remain unclear. This should trouble the conscience of every leader and citizen alike,” the bishops said.
They warned law enforcement against any heavy-handedness during the upcoming memorials, emphasizing that the police must uphold restraint and ensure that there are no fatalities, injuries, or damage to property — whether caused by protesters or infiltrators.
“Speaking truth to power is a sign of a healthy democracy and a mark of good governance. It must never be criminalized or silenced through violence,” they added.
To honor the victims of last year’s protests and offer comfort to grieving families, the bishops announced that special memorial Masses will be held in all Catholic parishes across Kenya on Saturday, 29th June 2025. The prayers will be a national gesture of solidarity and remembrance.
The bishops’ statement comes amid heightened tension as youth across the country prepare to mark the first anniversary of the protests that claimed dozens of lives. Civil society groups, religious leaders, and human rights defenders have also raised concerns over the use of force against peaceful assemblies.
As the country braces for Wednesday’s memorial protests, the Catholic Church has now added its voice to the growing call for calm, justice, and protection of constitutional freedoms.
