Agriculture holds immense promise as a game-changer for Kenya’s youth, and the government is determined to harness this potential to transform livelihoods, Livestock Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke has said.

Speaking after a meeting with the CEO of Shujaaz Kenya, PS Mueke emphasized the need to shift the mindset of young people and position agriculture as a viable and profitable career path.
“The future of employment and economic growth lies in sectors that can absorb our growing youth population. Agriculture, if well tapped, has the capacity to empower millions of young Kenyans,” said Mueke.

He noted that the government is prioritizing job creation and putting money in people’s pockets, with agriculture identified as one of the key drivers of this agenda. According to the PS, strategic partnerships with youth-focused organizations like Shujaaz Kenya are essential in making agriculture more attractive, accessible, and impactful for the younger generation.

“We are working to build a new narrative—one where agriculture is not seen as a fallback option, but as a smart, innovative, and fulfilling enterprise,” Mueke added.
The meeting forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development’s broader effort to integrate youth into agribusiness through awareness, training, and access to resources.

PS Mueke reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting youth-led agricultural initiatives, noting that sustained engagement and targeted investment will be key to achieving long-term food security and economic empowerment.
