National Assembly Speaker Hon. Moses Wetang’ula wants all VIP bodyguards, especially those assigned to Members of Parliament, to undergo fresh vetting. This comes in the wake of the shocking assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was gunned down in broad daylight in Nairobi’s Central Business District on April 30, 2025.

Speaking during the late MP’s emotionally charged requiem mass, Wetang’ula declared that internal threats now pose a greater danger to lawmakers than ever before. He said the country must face the uncomfortable truth that danger may now come from within. He directed all Members of Parliament to submit their security personnel for fresh vetting, stating, “This House will not bury another one of its own without doing everything in its power to protect them.”

The directive comes amid a growing national outcry for justice, with investigators confirming that six suspects—including the MP’s own driver and bodyguard—are already in custody. The implication of insiders has sent shockwaves through Parliament, raising concerns about loyalty and security lapses among those closest to Kenya’s elected leaders.

As part of efforts to establish the truth, Wetang’ula further instructed the Clerk of Parliament to compile all CCTV footage showing the late MP’s final movements within parliamentary precincts on the day he died. He emphasized that nothing would be left to speculation and that the House must piece together the truth frame by frame.

Turning his attention to city safety, Wetang’ula urged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure that all CCTV systems across the capital operate continuously to deter criminal activity. He insisted that there should be no blind spots in the city where criminals can operate undetected.

The assassination has left the political class shaken, exposing deep cracks in security arrangements and raising fears of politically motivated killings or organized internal sabotage. With more arrests said to be imminent, the nation waits with bated breath as the investigation unfolds—one that could shake the foundations of trust within the corridors of power.
