What was meant to be a getaway to India has instead landed a 25-year-old Kenyan woman in serious legal trouble, after a routine airport check turned into a high-stakes drug bust.

Caroline Wanjiku Mwangi was dramatically intercepted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Anti-Narcotics Unit just moments before boarding her flight to Goa, India. Officers, acting on sharp instincts, flagged her for a routine luggage inspection — but what they found was anything but routine.

Hidden inside her suitcase were two smaller bags containing a suspicious white powdery substance, tightly wrapped in yellow cellotape. A spot test quickly confirmed the officers’ suspicions: the substance was cocaine weighing approximately 1.3 kilograms.

Instead of jetting off to the vibrant shores of Goa, Wanjiku’s travel plans were grounded on the spot. She is currently detained at JKIA Police Station, undergoing processing and awaiting her court appearance.

The seized narcotics have been secured as exhibits, marking yet another win for the Anti-Narcotics Unit in the fight against drug trafficking through Kenyan airports.

Her planned escape to India has turned into an unexpected staycation behind bars — courtesy of the long arm of the law.
