The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has promoted a total of 25,252 teachers across the country for the 2024/2025 financial year — and Machakos and Makueni counties are among the biggest winners in the exercise.
According to official data released by Teachers Service Commission, both Machakos and Makueni recorded 668 promotions each, ranking second nationally just behind Meru County, which had 678. Kitui County also secured a significant share with 630 promotions, placing the Lower Eastern region firmly in the top promotion bracket.
The promotions were based on job group grades, ranging from C2 to D5, with the largest number of elevations happening in job group C4, followed by C3 and C5.
“This marks a major milestone for career progression. It’s not just a reward; it’s motivation for better service delivery,” said a senior education officer from Kitui.
Breakdown of Promoted Teachers in the Region:
Machakos: 668 (notably 266 in C4 and 119 in C5)
Makueni: 668 (mirroring Machakos with 266 in C4 and strong showings in C3 and D2)
Kitui: 630 (265 in C4, with 122 in C5 and 90 in D1)
TSC said the promotions are meant to fill vacant positions and strengthen school leadership and curriculum delivery across the country. The Commission emphasized that the distribution was guided by merit and available slots, not political or regional bias.
Meanwhile, some counties, particularly in the northeastern and coastal regions, received significantly fewer slots — with Wajir (341), Lamu (398), and Mandera (388) trailing behind.

C4: 8,508 promotions
C3: 4,971 promotions
C5: 5,425 promotions
Teachers from the Lower Eastern region have welcomed the news, saying the promotions will boost morale and productivity in classrooms that have long struggled with stagnation in career progression.
“For once, it feels like our hard work is being recognized,” said a deputy headteacher in Mbooni East.
The promotions take effect immediately and come at a time when the education sector is facing growing pressure to improve performance and accountability amid curriculum reforms.
